Grace sat down beside Lady Sutton at breakfast the next morning. “I understand your Mr. Cooper called yesterday,” said the countess.

“Yes.”

“I hope you are not seriously considering seeing that fellow again.”

“No, my lady, I declined his suit.”

“Good. Mr. Bridewell is a much more fitting prospect. He is solid and reliable, although perhaps a bit older.”

Grace returned a lame nod. “He is very nice.”

Lady Sutton placed her hand upon Grace’s forearm. “You are hesitant, my dear. Promise you will not allow yourself to rebuff him on my account. When the opportunity presents, you must not worry about me.”

That was not the reason for Grace’s reticence, but she gave Her Ladyship a pleasant smile. “Of course not.”

Lady Sutton took a sip of tea, unaware of the turmoil in Grace’s heart and her memory of Anthony’s kisses. She could not imagine allowing such intimacies with her suitor.

“Mr. Bridewell’s estate is not far from Fairford Park, Grace. We should still see very much of each other.”

Grace swallowed. “Yes, he would make an ideal husband. But he has not yet spoken of marriage.”

The countess patted Grace’s arm. “He will. He would not come visiting Fairford Park after church every Sunday if he were not seriously courting you.”

She knew Her Ladyship was right. She also knew she had to put thoughts of Anthony out of her mind and concentrate on securing the staid and proper Mr. Bridewell for her spouse.

“On another topic altogether,” said the countess, “I’ve decided ’tis time to move Anthony into the house. It will make his remaining lessons much more convenient for you.”

Grace looked sharply at Lady Sutton. Move him into the house? “M-my lady, are you sure?”

“Perfectly. We had supper together last night, and he could not have been more correct in his deportment. You have done an excellent job with him.”

“Thank you,” she murmured.

“He was so alone for all those years in Africa,” Lady Sutton said, her expression growing somber. “I fear he still blames his father for leaving him.”

Grace nodded, her thoughts racing. She was not sure she could succeed in her association with Mr. Bridewell if she had to face Anthony at every meal, walk past him in the corridors, sit with him in Her Ladyship’s parlor. “He does not speak of Lord Sutton.”

“No. Not even to me. One would think he’d want to know the details of Colin’s return home. That he would wonder…”

“He does not allow himself to wonder,” said Grace. “I think…It must hurt him very much to know he was wrong about his father for all those years.”

“Yet he feels very sour about rejoining society. He does not wish to acknowledge that he belongs here.”

Grace chewed her lip. “Has he said so?”

“He need not say anything, Grace. I know he still feels betrayed—by the very person who should have cared most for him.”

“Yes, you may be right, my lady,” Grace said.

“He told me of the tribe that took him in when he was nearly drowned, but I believe he remained an outsider even there.”

“It
